Fort Lawton Takeover Aftermath Interview

Description

This interview was conducted with Joseph Utzler. Joseph has lived periodically in the Northwest for the past 30 years, making Seattle his home in 2013 and maintains an active relationship with the American Indian communities in the city and surrounding areas. Though Joseph did not partake in the Fort Lawton Takeover himself, his experiences during his youth of growing up in Seattle provide insight into the aftermath of the takeover event and how it affected Indian-White relations in the area. Joseph describes his personal recollection of inclusivity expressed by the non-Indian population of Seattle, but acknowledges the racial barriers many Indians have faced in the wake of the Civil Rights Movement during the 1970s as told to him by Elders and surviving activists of the time.
